Sowing sustainability: Qualico Communities teaches students backyard ecology
Winnipeg, MB – Qualico Communities Winnipeg is leading the charge toward a greener future through its Student Nature and Sustainability program. The third annual immersive education program set out to educate and inspire young students on environmental sustainability through hands-on learning.
This year’s initiative brought immersive environmental education to Grade 3 and 4 students at École Sage Creek School, culminating with an outdoor workshop on May 29. Through a combination of outdoor exploration, in-class lessons, and hands-on activities, youngsters learned of the vital role native grasses play within their community.
“Teaching kids about sustainability is not just about science; it’s about creating experiences in their own neighbourhood,” said Tara Reid, Sales and Development Manager, Qualico Communities Winnipeg.
“When students can connect with the natural elements carefully integrated in their community, it creates a sense of pride and responsibility.”
The Student Nature & Sustainability Program is a collaborative effort with environmental expert Dr. John Buchko of Environmental Design Solutions (EDS). This year’s program involved approximately 50 students and was designed to inspire kids about the importance of environmental conservation while fostering a lifelong connection with nature.
The program combines interactive classroom presentations with fieldwork in Sage Creek’s naturalized areas. Under Dr. Buchko’s guidance, students were introduced to the unique properties and ecological benefits of native grasses. Following the classroom sessions, they embarked on an outdoor site tour, where the concepts they learned indoors came to life.
Students explored the native grass installations in Sage Creek’s public spaces, such as parks, stormwater retention basins, and its hydro corridor. To reinforce their understanding, each child received a packet of native grass seeds to plant in their own backyard.
Children learned how native grasses contribute to soil stability, water filtration, and biodiversity, while also recognizing these grasses within the public spaces they interact with daily.
“This program shines a light on the intricate balance of development and the natural environment,” said Mike Armstrong, Operations Manager, Qualico Communities Winnipeg.
“By showing students how native grasses and other sustainability-focused designs benefit their community, we’re empowering them to value and protect these resources for years to come.”
The 2025 program built on the success of Qualico Communities’ 2024 initiative, which explored wetlands and their role in stormwater management.
Sustainability is woven into the fabric of Qualico Communities Winnipeg’s philosophy, reflecting its long-term commitment to responsible land use.
“We know that the decisions we make today shape the future of our communities,” added Mike.
“Engaging kids in sustainable practices early on is a fun way for us to give back. It teaches the importance of environmental stewardship and helps create a future where the natural resources in our neighborhoods are cherished.”
In the coming years, Qualico Communities is aiming to introduce the initiative to nearby developments like Bison Run.
“Whether it’s Sage Creek or future communities, we’re committed to building neighborhoods that prioritize both people and nature,” Tara said.
By planting the seeds of environmental stewardship today, Qualico Communities is helping ensure a sustainable tomorrow. With nature-based learning and a little bit of outdoor exploration and fun, the Student Nature & Sustainability Program is an example of how collaboration and education can inspire the next generation of e
