Qualico Properties partners with a first-of-its-kind Indigenous-led and designed internship program
Edmonton, AB – Qualico Properties is a founding partner of Creating Career Pathways in Commercial Real Estate (CCPCRE), a first-of-its-kind Indigenous-led and designed internship program.
The program bridges industry gaps in Indigenous representation by offering paid internships in building operations and property management. This is complemented by mentorship, career development training, cultural education, and access to industry networks that support long-term growth and inclusion.
In partnership with Indigenous organizations, Tribal Chiefs Employment and Training Services Association, Oteenow (oh-TEE-now), and six industry leaders, this initiative supports reconciliation, innovation, and community investment. It is also helping Qualico Properties set a standard for Indigenous inclusion while building a future pipeline of talented leaders in commercial real estate.
Mike Saunders, Senior Vice-President, Qualico Properties, noted that Indigenous Peoples hold distinct cultural values, social norms, and lived experiences that must be considered when it comes to their career planning.
“For mentorship to be meaningful, it must be adaptable,” he said. “A mentor may need to shift their approach to better align with Indigenous values and teachings, such as emphasizing collective decision-making, relationship-building, or non-hierarchical communication styles.”
By emphasizing mutual respect and creating learning partnerships rather than relying on a top-down dynamic, Qualico Properties is building more inclusive and impactful connections, according to Mike.
“Through this intentional approach, we help ensure that Indigenous Peoples are not only welcomed into the industry, but are supported in building strong, sustainable careers,” he said.
Originally designed as a five-month internship pilot in the Greater Edmonton Area in 2024, the CCPCRE program has proved to be a successful initiative. Qualico Properties hired one of the interns from the program—Charlene Emery—into a full-time Building Operator position. Charlene has been thriving in her role, and her employment reflects the program’s long-term impact beyond its original scope.

The initiative has also deepened relationships with Indigenous-led organizations and created a template for future collaboration grounded in respect, trust, and shared purpose.
Although the internship is now complete, Qualico Properties continues to support the initiative’s partners and participants and is exploring the possibility of expanding the program into other regions in the future.
The CCPCRE has become more than just a pilot project for Qualico Properties. It is a long-term commitment to building better cities, stronger communities, and a more inclusive commercial real estate industry.
