Qualico observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Winnipeg, MB – On Sept. 30, Qualico observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, joining Canadians across the country in reflecting on the history and legacy of the residential school system. This day served as a moment to acknowledge the lasting impacts on Indigenous communities and an opportunity to consider how to meaningfully contribute to reconciliation. Honouring the truths shared by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit knowledge keepers is an essential step on the path toward reconciliation.
During Truth and Reconciliation Week, Qualico shared learning resources from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, encouraging employees to participate in a series of virtual lunch and learn webinars. These sessions featured diverse speakers who shared their perspectives, addressed questions, and encouraged dialogue on reconciliation, helping employees expand their awareness and understanding.
Standing in solidarity
Orange Shirt Day grew from the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor whose new orange shirt was taken from her on the first day of school. Her experience has become a powerful reminder of the effect on the indigenous community, and the movement now stands as a symbol of remembrance and the need for reconciliation.
Honouring this legacy, Qualico employees united to demonstrate their respect and solidarity with Indigenous communities by wearing orange shirts and commemorative pins, creating a visible reminder of the day.
Supporting community connection
As part of its broader initiative during Truth and Reconciliation Week, Qualico sponsored the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Truth and Reconciliation Game for the third consecutive year.
The regional team invited members from Indigenous partner organizations, including the University of Manitoba Indigenous Studies, Red River College Indigenous Education, Rossbrook House, and Ka Ni Kanichihk to enjoy the game from the company’s corporate suite.
“Organizing this event on behalf of Qualico is both a privilege and a responsibility that I hold with the utmost respect,” said Hillary Castaneda, Regional Communications Business Partner, Manitoba & Saskatchewan. “As someone who has chosen to make this land my home, I embrace the commitment to listen, learn, and actively contribute to the journey of reconciliation. The Orange Shirt Game Day is more than just an event—it’s a chance to honour the past, strengthen relationships, and support a meaningful initiative that helps build a future rooted in understanding and respect.”
Through these partnerships, the organization continues to nurture meaningful connections.
“Being part of this event made me feel seen and valued. It was powerful to share space with others who care deeply about reconciliation,” said Tracy Brant, Associate Dean, School of Indigenous Education, RRC Polytech Indigenous Education. “The atmosphere was filled with a sense of unity and purpose, and it was an experience that I, along with our students, will always remember.”
To make an even broader impact, Qualico donated an additional 100 game tickets to the University of Manitoba Indigenous Studies, Red River College Indigenous Education, and Rossbrook House organizations, fostering engagement and support within the community.
“At Qualico, we believe in the power of coming together to create meaningful connections and foster understanding,” said David Eggerman, Regional Vice-President, Qualico, Manitoba & Saskatchewan Region. “Sponsoring the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Orange Shirt game for the third consecutive year is an important opportunity for us to support Indigenous communities and amplify the vital message of reconciliation. By inviting Indigenous partner organizations to share this experience, and donating tickets to various Indigenous groups, we are working to build relationships founded on respect, partnership, and shared values.’’
