Edmonton, AB – Qualico’s commitment to one of its corporate responsibility foundations – community connection – was on full display as employees mentored a team of high school students at this year’s REET Institute Pitch Competition. After a Dragon’s Den style pitch competition, the students captured first place, earning a $10,000 scholarship and industry-wide recognition.
The annual competition challenged students to develop and deliver a commercial real estate pitch after eight weeks of intensive learning. While every team impressed judges with preparation and passion, Team Qualico Properties stood apart for the clarity of its thinking, depth of analysis, and confident delivery. The decision was unanimous.
Behind that success were three Qualico mentors who volunteered their time and expertise: Camille Lorieau, Director, Leasing, Qualico Properties, Elaf Khadhair, Legal Counsel, Qualico Edmonton, and Kara Engley, Regional Controller, Qualico Edmonton.
Learning through community connection
The REET Institute prepares high school students for careers in commercial real estate through training and mentorship. Volunteering for initiatives like the pitch competition bring Qualico’s corporate responsibility foundation of community connection to life by building relationships and supporting education and workforce development.
“These students came in curious and motivated, and over eight weeks we saw them grow into confident presenters who understood the fundamentals of commercial real estate,” said Camille. “Being able to support that journey is exactly what community connection means to us.”

The REET Institute was created to open doors into commercial real estate for young people who might not otherwise see themselves in the industry. Through hands-on learning and industry mentorship, students gain practical skills and exposure to career pathways.
Mentorship that makes a difference
For mentors, the experience was as rewarding as it was demanding. Students were expected to think critically, analyze market data, and present under pressure – skills professionals often spend years developing.
“What stood out was how quickly the students absorbed complex ideas and applied feedback,” said Elaf. “They asked thoughtful questions and weren’t afraid to challenge assumptions. That level of engagement is encouraging for the future of our industry.”
The program also reflects Qualico’s broader approach to corporate responsibility, which includes building partnerships, volunteering, and supporting initiatives that enhance quality of life in the communities it serves.
Investing in the next generation
Winning the competition marked a milestone for Team Qualico Properties, but mentors emphasized it is only the beginning.
“Programs like REET help bridge the gap between education and real-world careers,” said Kara. “If we can help students see what’s possible and give them tools to succeed, that’s a lasting investment in our communities.”
As Qualico continues to support education and workforce development initiatives, the success of Team Qualico Properties underscores the impact of meaningful community engagement – where knowledge, time, and relationships come together to create opportunity.
