Qualico employees help break fundraising record for Habitat for Humanity in southern Alberta
Calgary, Alberta – In the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, nine Qualico employees set out on an extraordinary journey as part of Ride Through the Rockies (RTTR) – an annual event organized to raise funds in support of Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. Over three days in Pincher Creek, the team braved unpredictable weather, high winds, and steep climbs, cycling an impressive 337 kilometres.
The annual event not only tested the riders’ endurance but also brought them together for a meaningful cause. This year, with the help of Team Qualico, the event raised a record-breaking $437,568 and reached a significant milestone of raising over $2 million to date.
Ken Crockett, Vice-President, Star Building Materials and founder of RTTR, reflected on the teams’ shared commitment that drives participants year after year: Habitat for Humanity’s mission to make affordable homeownership a reality for families in need.
“Every time we ride, we’re reminded that the funds raised represent lives that will be changed and communities which will be strengthened,” Ken said. “Last year, Habitat for Humanity helped 30 families [in Southern Alberta] take a step towards homeownership. Knowing that we contribute to that meaningful impact is a powerful motivator.”
Ken’s reflections were echoed by teammate Claudio Palumbo, Regional Vice President, Southern Alberta, who said his values are tied closely to the cause.
“This was my second time riding, and I come back because my values align with RTTR’s mission. I believe that we should help people in need whenever possible,” said Claudio. “On top of that, the ride itself is a great adventure. It pushes you in the best way and makes the experience unforgettable.”
This year, Claudio surpassed his fundraising goal, bringing in a record $101,000 with the support from the business community, his network, family and friends. When asked how it felt to exceed his goal, Claudio said he was moved by the generosity he experienced along the way.
“I am truly humbled by all the generous support and encouragement from those who followed my journey,” said Claudio. “A catalyst to my success was a donation from Bill Borger, from The Borger Group of Companies, a trusted partner of Habitat for Humanity. He donated half the contract amount from his work on the upcoming Dawson’s Landing Habitat project. This inspired other service providers to step up and do the same.”
Overall, Team Qualico raised over $306,000 for Habitat for Humanity, demonstrating how deeply the community rallied around the cause. That spirit of connection is what continues to inspire Ken, even 12 years, into the fundraiser.
“I think what continues to surprise me is the generosity and energy of everyone involved,” said Ken. “Each year, the riders and supporters commit themselves to the ride with enthusiasm and passion. The ride brings people closer to each other and deepens the connection to Habitat for Humanity’s mission that lasts long after the event.”
Claudio agreed, emphasizing that the energy stays with you even after the ride is finished.
“The sense of community, and the desire to succeed is something you’ll remember for a long time,” said Claudio. “You become a ‘roadee’ with lasting friendships that are well worth the effort.”
That community spirit was on display during the ride, as participants faced headwinds of up to 70 kilometers, flat tires, and moments of emotional and physical exhaustion.
Yet, instead of being deterred, the team found strength in each other. Small but powerful gestures like a smile, a wave, or words of encouragement from teammates and support volunteers, reminded riders they were not alone.
Drawing a parallel between the riders’ experience and Habitat for Humanity’s mission to support families through hardship, Ken said: “Much like the camaraderie that lifts riders through challenging moments, Habitat for Humanity ensures families in need have a network of support as they work toward affordable homeownership.”
“When the weather pushed us to our limits or someone was struggling to finish, the strength of our community made all the difference. Determination, supported by others, is what the event is all about.”
As Ride Through the Rockies wraps up, Ken hopes participants walk away with a sense of accomplishment and pride.
“RTTR isn’t just about the kilometers that we ride, it’s about the lives we’re transforming. I hope that everyone feels the impact of their efforts, knowing they’ve played a role in creating stability and hope for families,” said Ken.
