New lumber expansion leads to Star Building Components rebrand
Edmonton, AB – With the expansion of its operations and the introduction of framing lumber, Star Building Components has rebranded to Star Building Materials Edmonton as of Jan. 1, to meet the rising demand for materials essential to Edmonton’s homebuilding industry.
This initiative started in 2023 when Ken Crockett, Vice-President, Star Building Materials Calgary, presented a relocation plan proposal to Qualico’s executive team.
“The plan was aimed at expanding our product range to include building materials and potentially other offerings such as precision end trim floor joists, roofing shingles, manufactured stairs, prefabricated wall panels, interior mouldings, and doors,” explained Ken. “Following the acquisition of the 28-acre Nisku property in 2024, the business unit launched building material operations in Edmonton.”

All three locations in Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton are now unified under one legal name, Star Building Materials Ltd., and Edmonton has moved most of its operations to the Nisku facility, with only truss operations currently in Leduc.

“This is something the Qualico builders have been seeking for some time,” said Sandy Maxwell, Director, Branch Operations, Star Building Materials Edmonton. “In addition, our investment in a new fleet of delivery vehicles will allow us to bring more value to our partners and customers.”
Star Building Materials' newly established estimating team will curate lumber packages for homebuilders based on specified floor plans, helping them efficiently achieve their goals with a focus on quality and precision.
“Introducing Star Building Materials into our market positions us to meet consumer demand with greater efficiency and minimal disruptions, even in today’s highly competitive environment,” said Dave Armstrong, Vice-President, Pacesetter Homes Edmonton.
“With this specialized and highly skilled team on our side, we gain invaluable insights into the supply and demand of essential components, ensuring we can consistently deliver quality products to our consumers,” he added.

To ensure supply keeps up with Edmonton homebuilder demands, 80 truckloads of building products have already been delivered to Star Building Materials’ new location.
“Right now, our system has 1.7 million lbs of lumber orders for our Qualico builders,” explained Sandy. “With that in mind, our expanded delivery fleet, which includes a number of trailers and trucks, will be arriving in Edmonton by the end of January to ramp up deliveries.”
The new framing lumber operation will help speed up the construction process for homes in Edmonton and the surrounding areas, while also providing a revenue boost for Star Building Materials. It’s yet another way the business unit is working and adapting to meet customer needs by delivering industry-leading products and services.
