Winnipeg, MB – Three Qualico business units are coming together to help support Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Manitoba’s initiative to build a new Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg for sick/injured children and their families.

Building Products & Concrete Supply (BP Concrete), The Floor Show, and Star Building Materials will be involved in the project at various stages as the build progresses.

The new Ronald McDonald House is being built at 62 Juno St. near the Health Sciences Centre and will be much larger than the current house, with 40 bedrooms instead of 14 and 48,000 sq. ft. of space instead of 11,000 sq. ft.

This will allow for larger, more comfortable rooms for families, private washrooms in each room, specialty suites for bone marrow and solid organ transplant patients, as well as increased family programming.

It also means that waitlists will be shorter so that more families can be supported. In 2020, the waitlist for the existing Ronald McDonald House was 108 families.

Construction of the new house is coming along. Braden Shaw, Sales Manager, BP Concrete, said his team is in the early stages of their portion of the project, but they’ve completed ground-level walls, columns, grade beams, and some slabs so far. BP Concrete’s contribution is expected to be completed by next summer.

“This is a very important project that both BP Concrete and Qualico are proud to be a part of,” he said. “Projects for charities like this are paramount for our local community and being able to support these is an honour for our group. We are grateful for Qualico’s leadership and generosity towards this cause.”

Braden also credits Bird Construction for bringing BP Concrete and other Qualico business units onto the project.

“Working with Bird Construction on projects like this is always special,” he said. “Their commitment to safety, efficiency, and workmanship is very inspiring. They take pride in their efforts, which we try to mirror on service and quality of our work.”

The Floor Show’s contribution to the new house will begin early next year and will involve approximately 46,000 sq. ft. of various types of flooring, including carpet tile, luxury vinyl plank, as well as commercial sheet goods.

“Being a part of this project and having Qualico provide a donation to the cause is very important to us,” said Dan Schille, Vice-President, The Floor Show. “We are proud to be involved and hope the new space gives families the comforts of home and helps in the healing process.”

This isn’t the first Ronald McDonald House project that The Floor Show has assisted with. Back in late-2018/early-2019, RMHC Manitoba was looking to redo the flooring in the existing Ronald McDonald House as part of a larger renovation project. The Floor Show joined a team that included a local designer, contractor, and several other trades who all worked to ensure everything could happen within RMHC Manitoba’s budget.

Three staff members from The Floor Show volunteered their time to install the flooring over the course of a weekend and that volunteer labour, along with networking with local suppliers to procure donated floor prep, adhesive, and base material supplies, helped keep the cost of the flooring project to a minimum.

“It was such an amazing experience and we are all honoured to have been part of the team that helped create such a beautiful space for the families,” said Tony Brenda, Commercial Division Manager, The Floor Show – one of the three volunteers who installed the flooring. “Getting to see the facility and what they do firsthand was a great experience and I am very much looking forward to our role in building the new Ronald McDonald House facility.”

Along with the concrete supplied by BP Concrete and the flooring supplied by The Floor Show, Star Building Materials will be providing lumber and building materials for what will be an important space for children and their families who are experiencing a difficult time.
