Qualico supports empowerment and affordable housing through Women Build
Winnipeg, MB – Qualico has long been an avid supporter of Habitat for Humanity, and its continuous sponsorship of the Women Build program is a testament to its commitment to equity and supporting organizations that work to end the cycle of poverty.
Women Build empowers women to help families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership. Under the guidance of professionals, the program allows volunteers to engage in construction projects confidently, while nurturing their leadership potential both on and off the construction site. Women Build welcomes all genders and backgrounds to participate.
“It’s important to note that Women Build is not about the exclusion of men,” said Grace Karpinsky, Executive Assistant, Qualico Corporate. “It is about the inclusion of people in an environment that makes them feel comfortable and in a manner that works for them when they aren’t the stereotypical or professionally trained construction person.”
Grace Karpinsky, Executive Assistant, Qualico Corporate, has been part of the Women Build Committee since 2009.
A cornerstone of Qualico’s involvement is its role as the presenting sponsor of the Women Build Speaker Series, which it has supported since its inception in 2018. This annual fundraiser draws participants from leading Manitoba companies. With over 150 attendees, the event successfully fulfilled two objectives: providing valuable insights from an inspirational speaker and facilitating networking opportunities, all while raising funds for the Women Build program.
This year, the event proceeds will fund the 22nd Women Build project, constructing a home for Jacq, who immigrated from the Philippines to Canada in 2012. This new, affordable home will provide safety and security for Jacq and her son, Asher.
Bryan Ward, Vice-President of Qualico Communities and Board Chair for Habitat for Humanity, emphasized the importance of this event.
“Women Build and Habitat for Humanity don’t just provide housing – they create pathways to generational wealth, stability, and a sense of belonging. Seeing the dedication of those involved reinforced the importance of making homeownership attainable for more families,” said Bryan.
“Joy Lowen’s keynote was equally inspiring, reminding us that taking risks and embracing boldness is essential in both life and business. Her message resonated deeply with everyone in the room,” added Bryan.
Katie Doerksen, Corporate Sustainability Manager at Qualico, explained why supporting Women Build is significant for the company.
“Supporting Women Build is crucial for Qualico because it aligns with our goals of promoting gender equality and community development. This sponsorship not only aids Habitat for Humanity in creating safe and affordable housing but also empowers volunteers by providing them with the skills and confidence to build better futures for their communities.”
“While we recognize that there is still significant work to be done in the pursuit of an equitable future, opportunities like this — to engage with inspiring leaders and build community — undoubtedly provide a tremendous boost in accelerating progress,” Katie added.
Qualico’s commitment to Women Build and Habitat for Humanity demonstrates its dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable society.
