THE UPLANDS AT RIVERVIEW IS A QUALICO COMMUNITY IN EDMONTON THAT CHAMPIONS BEING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE NEIGHBOURHOOD.
The Uplands at Riverview is designed to be a sustainable and walkable community, featuring ground-breaking environmental initiatives that preserve the natural ecosystems, and promote stewardship of wetland habitats.
With over six kilometres of walking trails, the community promotes an active lifestyle, encouraging engagement with nature and the outdoors. The wetland terrain totals 44 acres, with an overall environmental reserve footprint of 13.8 acres.
The utility corridor along the community’s northern perimeter is an active pollinator corridor, providing a native quality habitat for pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and birds. Qualico had thousands of flowering shrubs and native species planted, not only to provide habitat opportunities for wildlife, but to also protect water quality, reduce spraying, and mowing maintenance.
The community boasts the first-ever amphibian fence in Edmonton, which keeps species safely off the road. There is also a constructed wildlife crossing underneath 199th Street, specifically designed with avenues for all species, including boulder and log arrangements that act as a natural habitat.
Qualico Communities Edmonton also takes part in the Yellow Fish Road program. The program is a proactive initiative to educate communities about water pollution through storm drains. Oil, pesticides, fertilizer, paint, pet feces and other toxic substances can end up in the local water source through storm drains. Yellow fish symbols and "Rain Only" text are painted on The Uplands at Riverview's storm drains as a reminder to people that only rain should be entering the storm drain system.
