Broadview and Sterling Homes Employees Give Back During Volunteer Day
Winnipeg, MB – Ten employees recently participated in a Habitat for Humanity volunteer day, which was organized by Broadview and Sterling Homes Winnipeg.
Working alongside other teams, the group helped with building tasks for townhouses Habitat for Humanity is constructing in the Transcona neighbourhood, off of Pandora Ave. Around 70 families will start moving into the townhouse complexes near the end of September.
Caitlin Schoenborn, Customer Relations Agent, Broadview and Sterling Homes Winnipeg, said her group spent the day putting in floor joists in the basement of one of the homes. She shared she enjoyed learning about Habitat for Humanity and how the organization helps so many families.
“It was great being able to see what the house looked like when we got there, compared to when we packed up for the day,” said Caitlin. “We were also able to look at a unit that was completed, which just made the whole event turn full circle. Knowing that we were able to help build a home for families who have never been able to own a home meant a lot.”
Something that stood out for Caitlin was one of the stories a Habitat for Humanity employee shared with the team.
“One family had mentioned that their kids are going to be able to have their own rooms for the first time ever,” she said. “I thought that was super special, knowing that we are helping to build the home these families will create their memories in.”
Kayla Gauthier, Production Assistant, Broadview and Sterling Homes Winnipeg, worked alongside Caitlin for the day, and said she appreciated the chance to have a different work experience than she normally does in her day-to-day office role.
“I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn and grow,” said Kayla. “Our crew leader answered all the questions I had throughout the day and really seemed to care about what he does, which made the experience that much better.”
Although it was a lot of hard work, Kayla said she would definitely recommend volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to other Qualico employees.
“Feeling as though my volunteer day will actually impact a family one day gives me a sense of pride that I don’t get to experience often,” she said. “I would love to do something like this again. It really makes you feel good at the end of the day.”
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that works to build safe, decent, affordable homes for purchase by low-income working families. In 2023, 19 Habitat Partner families across Manitoba received keys to their new homes, and Habitat for Humanity Manitoba plans to complete 23 homes across Manitoba this year.
