StreetSide Developments BC Begins Work on Nature Preserve in Surrey

Surrey, BC - Construction has started on a new 67-acre nature conservation preserve in South Surrey. StreetSide Developments BC is helping to build a portion of the new Fergus Creek Watershed Biodiversity Preserve to restore a vital piece of natural habitat and provide a walkable sanctuary and source of inspiration for residents in the area.

The new park – set to open in 2024 – will be located within walking distance of The Boroughs, StreetSide’s newest development in South Surrey. A network of pathways will lead to the preserve, giving residents and visitors alike an opportunity to learn about the history and ecological importance of the area, or simply take in the site’s pristine natural beauty.

The Preserve is located on a hunting and gathering site used for thousands of years by the Semiahmoo First Nation, on a tributary that feeds into the Little Campbell River. The area is being restored with native plants and trees, a new pond, and other landscaping strategies designed to provide viable homes for protected species like the northern red-legged frog, Pacific shrew, and snowshoe hare.

Kyle Foot, Development Manager, StreetSide Developments BC, says the project demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to balancing environmental sustainability with responsible community development.

“Climate change is very real, and it's something that we at StreetSide BC keep at the forefront of our minds when we're designing homes and making sure that they're as sustainable as they can be,” said Kyle.

StreetSide is ahead of the competition when it comes to green design Kyle added, with projects routinely surpassing the sustainability benchmarks established by BC’s energy step code.

“We’ve worked hard to make sure that our contribution to the Fergus Watershed Biodiversity Preserve will be beneficial to the Surrey community as well as the local wildlife. We’re very proud to be a part of it,” he said.
StreetSide is contributing a portion of the landscaping, planting, and construction work for the site, including a new walking path that allows residents to explore the area while protecting the delicate natural ecosystem surrounding it.

In addition to its primary purpose as a conservation refuge and walking path, the City of Surrey will integrate a mix of educational programming, Indigenous history, and a demonstration garden showcasing native edible plants within the preserve. This will help tell the story of the site and protect the land for future generations of people, plants, and animals alike.

The Preserve will become a welcome amenity for residents of The Boroughs. The unique residential townhouse development is designed for young families, first-time homebuyers, or downsizers. Located in the bustling Surrey community of Grandview Heights, the area offers an abundance of shopping and entertainment options, with unfettered access to downtown Vancouver, the US border, and the Pacific Ocean.

The three-phase modern townhouse master-planned community will feature 314 sustainably designed homes with attractive features like rooftop decks for select homes, spacious open-concept floorplans, and carefully curated details.
