Building Products & Concrete Supply Leverages Large Projects, New Equipment to Continue its Success During the Pandemic

Winnipeg, MB – In a year that has so far presented some unique challenges for the building construction industry, Building Products & Concrete Supply (BP Concrete) has been working hard to ensure it sees continued business growth, while also celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Although the company has seen slightly lower volumes compared to this time last year, the number of ongoing projects the team is involved in has helped to keep things steady throughout the pandemic.

Braden Shaw, Sales Manager, Building Products & Concrete Supply, noted a couple of important factors that have helped the company continue to move forward, even in the midst of the global health crisis.

“The five permanent locations that we have in Winnipeg and surrounding areas are key to maintaining high levels of service throughout the entire city,” said Braden. “This allows us to strategically move resources around to support higher volumes in any area, as that demand changes daily. Our strong quality control program is also an integral part that maintains consistency throughout all locations.”

Three major projects are keeping the BP Concrete team busy right now – the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre, the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Inuit Art Centre.

BP Concrete has finished pouring the foundation and walls for the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre and is now in the early stages of hollow core topping mixes for the floors. The job is being provided as a gift-in-kind donation through Qualico (read the full Impact in Action story on the gift-in-kind donation here).

This long-term treatment facility, which is expected to be completed by spring 2021, will provide 50 beds for adult men in Manitoba who are looking for help with addiction recovery.

“The project is one-of-kind and directly focuses on people in our community,” said Braden. “Investing in the health and well-being of the people in our community is paramount for our group. We expect this facility to be a great success and we are very thankful for the opportunity to support and be a part of it.”

BP Concrete is also working on the 86,000-sq.-ft. Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada building, which has an expected completion timeline of late 2021 / early 2022. Braden noted that it is in the very early stages, with piles and pile caps near completion so far.

Once finished, the facility is expected to play an important role in promoting tourism and Canada’s heritage by preserving, presenting, and promoting the history of aviation development in Canada.

“This project is an investment in cultural and historical infrastructure,” said Braden. “Given the history that we have as a company and how we’ve been an integral part of developing the infrastructure and structures in Winnipeg, we are extremely grateful to be part of building an iconic landmark like this.”

The third large project that BP Concrete currently has on the go is the 40,000-sq.-ft., four-storey Inuit Art Centre at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The project is slated to be completed in November 2020.

Once built, the new centre will help bring the voices of Indigenous people to the forefront of the community and bring people together through the power of artistic expression.

“It is an absolute honour to be involved with this project, as it is another iconic cultural building that we are so proud to be a part of,” said Braden. “Being involved in projects like the Inuit Art Centre helps drive our company’s framework and values of Unity, People, Quality and History.”

Aside from major building construction projects, another key to BP Concrete’s success that Braden points to is the concrete paving industry.

“We are heavily involved with industry on promoting the lifecycle cost benefits of concrete pavement as the number one choice for infrastructure,” he said. “Every year, our paving industry clients and the opportunities they offer us are the driving force of our success.”

Last year, BP Concrete purchased a Reliable Mix by Axiom Portable Plant (RMX 200) to better serve its highway paving projects, which are frequently located in remote areas, and require extremely high volumes within short time frames, with demanding supply rates.

Ryan Braun, Operations Manager, Building Products & Concrete Supply, noted that there are multiple benefits to using a portable plant.

“It ensures quality product and provides the best service to the customer possible, while conserving the number of trucks and fuel needed,” Ryan explained. “The model we purchased is self-erecting, so it can be set up on any solid base or rig matting without having to build a large foundation or use cranes to lift components into place. This keeps our employees safe and means we can set up in one day and be producing concrete the next.”

The fully-automated plant also allows for greater accuracy, which in turn produces higher-quality, more consistent concrete, with fewer employees needed to get the job done.

Braden said he expects projects in the paving sector to continue strong into the fall and that there are some large commercial and industrial projects on the horizon for 2021 that BP Concrete plans to bid on.

“We are very optimistic that the construction industry will remain steadfast throughout this trying time and in turn keep our trucks moving every day,” he said.
