Continuing to Provide a Higher Education with the Expansion of SAIT'S Trades and Technology Complex – a Look Back at the Impact of Qualico's Support

Calgary, AB – For over 100 years, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary has offered applied education focused on hands-on learning, research, and collaboration with industry partners.

In 2010, Qualico helped SAIT create the Trades and Technology Complex. Along with nine other homebuilders in the region, Qualico provided a $1-million donation towards the new complex. The donation, made almost 10 years ago, is still affecting students daily, as it allowed for the growth required to increase the number of students attending the institute.

Glynn Hendry, Regional Vice-President, Southern Alberta, explained that the decision to help fund the new complex was linked to industry needs and interest in helping students find employment.

“We provided this donation because we saw the need to increase the number of tradespeople in our industry and we wanted to advocate for the great career it could be,” said Glynn. “Many of our employees at Qualico receive some form of their education from SAIT. This was a donation where we knew it would directly impact our current and future employees.”

The 740,000-sq.-ft. Trades and Technology Complex was completed in 2012 and opened in the fall that year.

Upon completion of the new complex, Scott MacPherson, Dean, School of Construction at SAIT, shared his appreciation for the generous donations provided by the participating homebuilders via the institute’s website.

“I wish to recognize the invaluable contributions of the Founding Builders and Community Partners, who have each donated $1 million for the construction of the Trades and Technology Complex, our most recent campus expansion that will create 3,600 additional spaces for students at SAIT,” said Scott.

The facility combines modern and attractive design with a functional, practical, and efficient workspace, complete with the newest technology that allows students to reach their full potential and instructors to perform their best when teaching.

Along with contributing to the construction of the new complex, Qualico’s donation was also used to help create the Founding Builders Home Lab, a large, hangar-like space where students learn to build houses in teams.

The lab space doubled in size, allowing students to build two 1,000-sq.-ft. homes simultaneously. There are large doors on the building meaning that once the homes are completed, they can easily be moved out of the building and transported.

Thanks to funding from donors like Qualico, SAIT can accept more students each year and continue to provide them with a quality education that has real-world impact in Calgary and beyond.
