Star Building Materials Celebrates $18 Million Expansion With Sod-Turning Event On Remediated Land

Winnipeg, MB – Qualico is proud to announce that Star Building Materials Winnipeg is marking the start of the second phase of an $18 Million expansion project. Star Building Materials hosted St. Boniface Councillor Matt Allard along with staff on Tuesday to commemorate turning the first patch of sod in this next step of the project.

Investing $100,000 in remediating 4.5 acres of industrial brownfield into useable industrial land, Qualico is committed to responsibly growing business for customers, employees and the community.

“One of the things we looked at was developing in greenfield space,” said Jim Phillips, Vice-President of Star Building Materials Winnipeg. “However, the decision was to stay in the community we live in and give back to where we came from.”

The second phase will include $4.9 million development of a new shipping yard, office facility including a lunchroom and washrooms, cold storage building and paving. The next phase is a $10 million expansion set to commence in 2018 and will include a new contractor store, offices and a drive-through for customers. The $18 million investment includes a total of 54,000 square feet of office, storage, retail and covered yard space.

“As we grow and expand to meet the needs of the business, it allows us to create jobs and give back to the community,” said Phillips.

In addition to the expanded facilities, Star Building Materials is looking to grow its workforce by as much as 10 per cent once construction is complete.

The new consolidated site is located on Speers Road at Maginot Street just down the road from the original Star Building Materials site.
